With Coachella right around the corner and the 2019 Coachella Mixes in the works with John Beaver, everything I see and hear reminds me of those festival weekends. My compadre Dariio posted this link to Justice Live at Glastonbury on his facebook page and although their sound has matured since I saw them for the first time at Coachella over 10 years ago, it sure fuckin brings me back!
Justice has inspired me so much over the years. They introduced a sound I had never heard before and it pushed me to find new sounds, mixes, mashups, sets, rules and just keep going with my music. No one has brought grimey electro glitch and distorted sounds together and end up with mainstream results like they have.
So here is to a unique, off the wall, glitchy, melodic weekend, everyone!
Happy Friday and a Happy New Year for that matter… welcome to the first Finally Friday of 2019! Let’s jump right in. I’m starting off with my long time homeboy Formless from the California quasi-north and his new drum and bass mix called Turn n’ Burn.
I’ve been into drum and bass again lately and started a lot of production projects in that direction. I was really looking forward to this mix when I heard Zach was working on it and it’s been my jam all day… maybe it’ll be the weekend anthem? 😉
I’m a little bit late posting this today, but it’s still Friday in at least Hawaii, right? 😀
Also I’ve been jamming to this mix by Dariio, one of my old school friends and musical partners. It’s his live recording of the Pancakes and Booze Art Show in.. I assume Washington State. Either way it sounds like a finger licking good time. This mix is dope to chill to or to dance to or even to rage to, which makes it perfect for so many situations, for example, doing my weekly cruise home from work on Friday’s through that Bavarian town on the way home, blasting house music for all my geezer, lederhosen-wearing, buddies… Sorry for the disturbance every Friday around 2pm ya’ll 😀
Now go ahead and chill, dance or rage to this:
There are a bunch of people that I really miss since my exile 6 years ago. This dude is definitely one of them. I’m glad we were able to mix it up, produce it up and party it up back in the day and I know we’ll be chillin here in Germany at some point! But this is also another reason why I like to cover “locals” and friends of the scene instead of just some big name boiler room mixes, as cool as they may be… the personal touch is just a bit cooler to me.
Here is a brief clip of us playing at Pinky’s which since has burnt down. Miss those times, buddy… 🙂
This is truly something else. It’s friggin intense.. kind of a Aphex Twin meets Vitalic, but in a completely different sense than I initially would have liked to experience that sort of pairing.
The first set of hi hats start 16 minutes into the mix.
3 Minutes later something resembling a kick! Yes!… hmm wait. Just another tease. And the seemingly random, but yet repetitious, rhythmic mix continues.
I’d freak out if I got lost and found myself in that room on accident. It’s interesting to see the people so thirsty for a beat.. and it’s not coming. Patience is being tested..
Though I must say I find the sounds eerie and hunting.. and pretty, unlike the aphex twin show I saw once which seemed to be based more on aggressive experimental sounds. Still I don’t know how long I’d be able to handle it if I was actually there on a night out partying… at the very least I’d leave with some heart burn. I don’t think we’ll have to bother with a tracklist this time 😀
It feels like my train is finally pulling into the station…after going non-stop for two weeks. This is a potentially huge Friday for me personally and Chris Lake is bringing the energy I need to start the next 7 days.
I love tech and deep house but during most of my DJ sets back in the day I played straight up, bangin’ and electro house and I miss this drive sometimes here in Germany. This mix is just full of dope ass tracks with off beat rhythms and bass hits… I need this right now.
So let’s recharge with Chris Lake after this long ass week.
14. Chris Lake Ft. Alexis Roberts – Turn Off The Lights (Cages Remix) [46:50 – 50:24]
15. ? [50:24 – 53:38]
16. Chris Lorenzo & Taiki Nulight Feat. Dread MC – Mind Control (Never Say Never) [53:38 – 56:56]
17. Steve Lawler & Arthur Baker – Into The Dance (Amine Edge & Dance Remix) [56:56 – 1:00:52]
18. Chris Lake & Marco Lys – La Tromba (Marco Lys Rework: Original Version) [1:00:52 – 1:06:16]
Why is Friday the best day of the week? Picture this: Being a free person and living your life is awesome, but it doesn’t compare to the first day of freedom after being locked up over the weekend for doing some dumb shit… That’s why Friday is the best: Freedom for a few days and time to let go of the past week… and if you can’t follow me, maybe you need to go do some dumb shit 🙂
And no one can get your weekend groove started like the legend himself, Carl Cox. I have to admit, being so fond of Daft Punk, he had me at that first track. It really didn’t matter at that point what the rest of the mix was about, I decided right there and then that I’m gonna post it.. I put my faith into the Cox 😉 as should you.

How long have I waited for this specific Friday? About 2 to 3 weeks. Just finished the 14th annual Coachella Mixes with John Beaver (grab them here) and really got into the Coachella mood, which is going on this weekend. I thought about the many innovative acts I saw over the years and one guy keeps standing out. Mike Relm!
I like to think of myself as a really good mashup artist but Mike Relm takes the idea to another world. He mixes, scratches, mashes not only music but also videos. He scratches movies… let that marinate for a second if you haven’t seen him live before. It was one of the craziest shows I’ve seen. This video is a pretty good example of what it was like, even though he’s having technical issues… still amazing.
Watch this video as your weekend inspiration. Now you’re hella ready to party 🙂
